Skilled Nursing Questions Families Should Ask
Skilled nursing is one of those phrases that creates confusion because it can show up in different parts of the senior care conversation.
Skilled care usually means care that requires clinical skill: nursing, therapy, wound care, injections, medication management, or medical monitoring. But families may also hear about a skilled nursing facility, a short-term rehab stay, or skilled services at home.
The useful question is: are we talking about the type of care, the place of care, or the payment rule? Those are different issues.
Families should also ask what is not included. Skilled services may be limited in time and may not cover ongoing bathing help, meals, supervision, transportation, or companionship.
Do not let the phrase do too much work. Translate it into tasks: what care is needed, where will it happen, how often, for how long, and who pays?
