Prior Authorization Questions Families Should Ask
Prior authorization can sound like a back-office insurance phrase. For families, it can mean the difference between care starting now and care waiting on approval.
A doctor, hospital, therapist, or facility may recommend care, but that does not always mean the insurer has authorized payment. This can affect rehab, home health, equipment, medications, facility stays, or other services.
Families should ask exactly what is pending. What was requested? Who submitted it? When was it submitted? What documents are missing? When is a decision expected?
The next question is what happens if the request is delayed or denied. Who files the appeal? What evidence is needed? What care is required while the family waits?
Prior authorization is not just paperwork. It can change the timeline, the bill, and the safety of the discharge plan. Treat it like part of the care plan.
