Hospital Social Worker Questions Families Should Ask
Hospital social workers and case managers can be very helpful. They also work inside a system that moves quickly and has pressure to discharge patients once hospital-level care is no longer required.
That means families should not wait passively for every option to be explained. Some options may not be covered by insurance. Some may require private pay. Some may depend on availability. Some may be possible only if the family asks early.
Ask for the full map: home with services, home with private care, rehab, skilled nursing, assisted living, family caregiving, equipment, transportation, and follow-up care.
Then ask what each option requires. Who pays? What must be approved? What documents are needed? What part of the plan is the family expected to provide?
This is not criticism of social workers. It is respect for reality. Helpful people inside rushed systems still need families to ask precise questions.
