Dementia Supervision Questions Families Should Ask
Dementia care is often discussed as memory help, but the bigger issue for many families is supervision.
The person may still hold a good conversation during a visit. They may still recognize family. But the care question is what happens when no one is watching: wandering, medication mistakes, unsafe cooking, falls, missed meals, unsafe driving, or confusion at night.
Families should ask how long the person can safely be alone. That answer may change over time, and it may be different in the morning, evening, overnight, or after a change in routine.
Medication safety is especially important. A pillbox is helpful only if the person takes the right medication at the right time. The same is true for meals, bathing, and bathroom trips.
The practical principle is simple: memory care is safety care. Plan around supervision before a crisis proves the need.
