One of the biggest concerns people have today regarding the care of an elderly parent, has to do with:

“What if my Mom gets to the point of needing some serious caregiver help at home, but the insurance won’t cover the services and the hours she needs… What then?”

A very reasonable question. The answer is one that depends on a few factors, one of them being the unique circumstances and insurance climate the senior has.

Understanding your mom’s situation prior to actually needing the services is essential. You won’t hear me talk about this enough!

Yet, are there caregiver help services and programs out there that your parents could be eligible for and thus lift a heavy burden of care and worry off your shoulders?

The answer is YES!

I’m going to refer to one program in particular in the South Florida area because it’s where we live, and where most of the patients and families we provide services for reside. But every state has and Area Agency on aging. Find out which one services your particular State or Region.

THE ALLIANCE FOR AGING -was designated by the State of Florida in 1989 as the Area Agency on Aging for Miami Dad and Monroe Counties.

Currently a private, not-for-profit organization, part of a nationwide network of more than 650 Area Agencies on Aging ran mostly by an amazing management team and highly dedicated volunteer workforce.

The Agency funds and provides oversight of Home and Community based services that keep people at home and out of nursing homes… THAT MEANS YOUR MOM AND MY MOM!

The services, valued in excess of $35 Million, are provided to older people through a network of local agencies.

Some of the services they provide include:

  • …Home delivered meals
  • …Recreation
  • …Adult Day Care
  • …Personal Care
  • …Legal help
  • …Transportation

By the way the services above are needed by 99% of seniors in all communities, yet most of them are not covered by healthcare insurance.

Any person 60 or older is eligible. Some programs have eligibility requirements such as income, a high degree of convalescence, dementia, etc.

Their Programs and Services section is pretty self explanatory. Once there, click on the Medicaid Manage care link.

The SMMC (state wide medicaid manage care – program) has two main components, the Managed Medical Assistance Program, and the Long Term Care program (THIS IS THE ONE YOU ARE GUNNING FOR!)

You can contact them at their main number: 305.670.6500

Here’s what’s going to happen after you call them:

DAY ONE – Call and ask to speak to someone regarding the Long Term Care program for your Mom or Dad. They will take some basic information from you and schedule a call with a Case Manager.

AROUND 2-3 WEEKS LATER – A Case Manager will call to ask you specific information in order to start the application process and schedule a more formal interview.

AROUND 3 MONTHS LATER – A more in-depth interview takes place via phone with the Case Manager. The entire process is mapped out and you will get all the forms and applications to fill out, including the form 3008 which your doctor will be filling out.

IN ABOUT 6-9 MONTHS – You will get approved for not only the LTC services but for any other services that you parents may be eligible for. Once approved the Alliance team will focus on providing as many services you are eligible for, as long as you need them. You also get to choose the Home Care Agency you’d like to provide the services to your Mom.

“Once the process started it was pretty smooth. The help for my Mother from the Alliance team was AMAZING! Once we were approved, they went out of their way to make sure we qualified for services we didn’t even know existed. They are an awesome organization!  -Jackie G/Angel Home Care Services family-patient”

The one thing I can tell you is that the time for approval varies case by case. Some people get approval in 9 months, others in 6 and others under 3 and even 2 months.

The one variable we noticed in cases that seemed to have been fast-tracked, where the ones where family members stayed on top of it and managed the process week in and week out.

The wait time seems to be insanely long, I know, but look… time is going to pass by anyway. I promise you, 6 months will flash by in the blink of an eye.

Just stay the course, and before you know it, you’ll be getting a call for your approval and start enjoying the awesome caregiver help benefits this program provides!

Take care!
